Picking a category sounds like the easiest part of setting up a business listing. Pick the one that sounds closest, move on to the next section, done. But get it wrong and your business becomes almost invisible to the exact customers who were looking for you.
Customers filter by category first
Think about how you’d search for a business yourself. You wouldn’t type a business name you don’t know. You’d browse or search Home Services, or Automotive Services, or Health & Medical, and narrow from there. If your business sits in the wrong category, or a category too broad to mean anything, you simply won’t show up when it counts.
Be as specific as the category list allows
CCC Business Directory has 27 categories, from Food & Catering and Fashion & Apparel down to more specific ones like Salon & Barber Supplies, Boda Boda & Transport, and Printing & Design. A general hardware store fits neatly under Construction & Hardware. A shop that only sells spare parts for motorbikes fits better under Boda Boda & Transport than the broader Automotive Services, because that’s the exact phrase a customer searching for boda boda parts will use.
If your business genuinely spans more than one area, choose the category where most of your revenue or your most searched-for service actually sits. A salon that also sells hair products is still, first and foremost, Beauty & Wellness.
Avoid the temptation to pick “Professional Services” for everything
It’s tempting to default to a broad catch-all category thinking it casts a wider net. It does the opposite. Broad categories are crowded with businesses that have nothing in common, which means a customer scanning that list is less likely to notice yours, and the businesses that do belong in a specific category (say, Financial Services or ICT & Cyber Services) get pushed further down.
Category and county work together
Once your category is right, the county filter does the rest of the narrowing. A customer looking for Professional Services in Nairobi City won’t see your listing if you’re registered under Nairobi but your category doesn’t match what they searched. Getting both right, category and county, is what makes the directory’s search actually work for you instead of against you.
Changing your category later
If you registered under the wrong category, it’s a quick fix. Log into your account, edit your listing, and select the correct one. Since edits go back through the standard approval process, updates typically clear within the same 2 business day turnaround as a new listing.
A five minute decision at signup can be the difference between showing up first for the customers who need you, or getting lost in a category that was never really yours.
